Reach UP Magazine
Crystal Wacker is the Editor-in-Chief of Reach UP Magazine, a magazine designed for the encouragement and enrichment of the urban woman in inner cities, prisons and reentry programs.While serving a number of years in inner-city ministry, Crystal saw countless women who had little to no healthy influence of mothers or grandmothers. They were cheated out of the benefit of the teaching and wisdom of previous generations of women. They missed out on that nurturing environment which shows them the joys of being a woman and helps them become good parents. Reach UP magazine is a way to communicate with this often neglected segment of society in a non-threatening, engaging, and uplifting manner. Topics fall under the categories of faith, family, fashion, finances, fitness, and food. This realization became God’s challenge to her to make a difference. Reach UP has become her passion to help women reach up in every role and circumstance they find themselves in.
How did she do that?
"Reach UP is definitely a teamwork. It's the sum of all the parts working together utilizing their skills. As I think about the team and those I reach out to for certain projects, we have used men and women with editing skills, graphic designing, video production, web design and maintenance, writing skills, and photography skills. That's not to mention those who have written specifically on the subjects of child rearing, education, health, financial matters, co-dependency, food, self-defense and so on. The magazine definitely gives an outlet to people involved in inner-city ministries to address issues, as well as a platform for women in the inner-city to express their thoughts and ideas. We are listening!"
Is being a part of my sister's big vision count as having my own vision?
Absolutely, being part of a dream and working towards it, is having your own dream/vision. That is one reason why I'm in constant communication with my team as to what God is doing. Without them, I could not do Reach UP. It works because I am dependent upon a group of people who see the need to speak into the lives of inner-city/urban women in a magazine format that those women can process the information on their own, in their own timing.
What is ReachUP Magazine?
Reach UP is easily downloadable from the website, www.reachupmag.com. Currently the magazine is published quarterly in English and Spanish. There is no subscription cost, and the electronic format can be printed by inner-city ministries and distributed to their constituents. Prison Fellowship is just one of the ministries that network with the magazine to reach challenged and struggling women of our communities
Pastor Crystal encourages inner-city ministries to use Reach UP as a tool to influence and help women in the inner city, whether they specifically have a women’s ministry or not. The magazine can be given as a gift at an outreach or in visitation, and it definitely can be used as a supplemental ministry to women. Reach UP can stand alone and stay in a woman’s home, waiting for her to process the articles in her own time.
How can I help?
1) If you know of a ministry/organization that could utilize Reach UP, please connect us either by direct email connection, forwarding communication or giving us the contact and we'll follow up.
2) If you or the group you represent would undertake the costs of printing for a ministry who would like to use the magazine in their outreach/work but cannot afford to print. That connection would be a ministry in itself!
